Did you know that today, May 31, 2013 is World No Tobacco Day? This day was created by the World Health Organization in 1987. The purpose of the "holiday" is to be a day where there is no smoking around the world. World No Tobacco Day is about bringing awareness of the health issues and dependency issues related to tobacco use. In the last 30 days we have seen a tremendous uptick in states passing legislation that limits the amount of information found in background screening reports that can be used to determine employment within the company. The most recent state to take such action is Nevada, which just passed a law that prohibits the use of consumer credit reports or any other credit information when it comes to employment eligibility purposes. Nevada joins California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Oregon, Vermont and Washington in enacting a law to restrict an employer’s ability to use credit information for employment purposes

Credit Information legislation when it applies to using it in the realm of employment has been radically increasing in the US. Colorado is the newest state to join 8 others in the prohibition of using credit information when considering an applicant for employment purposes. The law Colorado Revised Statute 8-2-126, also known as “Employment Opportunity Act", will go into effect on July 1, 2013 after the legislation was enacted and signed into law on April 13, 2013.
